Introduction to Safe and Fun Canning


Want to be able to make your own jams, salsas, chutneys, and sauces, and preserve seasonal produce to enjoy throughout the year, but feel intimidated by the world of canning? Come learn how to preserve food using safe and proven methods at this beginner-friendly workshop. In this workshop, we will cover the boiling water method for canning acidic foods, the easiest and most accessible canning technique using equipment you likely already have in your kitchen. Come away feeling empowered to make so many of the products you usually buy in the store and preserve the bounty of your garden or the local growers you support.  We will can a jam or a sauce (or both), depending on seasonal availability of veggies and fruits. Silvia is a certified canning instructor and has years of experience using diverse food preservation methods. Participants will bring home handouts with steps, recipes, troubleshooting techniques, and resources, as well as two 500ml jars of their own canned jam or salsa. Participants are asked to bring two empty 500 ml canning jars with new lids to the workshop.

About the Instructor

Silvia is the owner and founder of Mainstream Permaculture, a social enterprise dedicated to empowering individuals, families and communities around food sovereignty and sustainable life choices. Silvia is also an experienced certified life and career coach who uses permaculture, ecopsychology and systems theory to support people and communities in building resilience.
