Description

No-weeding, No spraying for pests, No fertilizing. How can we design farms that sponsor their own fertility and pest management with minimal or no off-farm inputs? Examples of strategies to mimic nature with soil and habitat building from two long term, “eco-organic” farms, Biodesign Farm (Montana) and Woodleaf Farm (California) will be discussed extensively.  Enroll in all three eco-farming workshops as a short course, and receive a 15% discount!

About the Instructor

Helen has an M.S. in Horticulture from Rutgers University, worked in Integrated Pest Management in New Jersey, was a Horticulture Extension Agent in Montana for 17 years and an Organic Systems Research Assistant in the Horticulture Dept. at Oregon State University. She also farmed Organic-certified vegetables and tree fruit at her own farm Biodesign Farm (Montana, 1993-2010), Woodleaf Farm (California, 2012-2015), and presently co-owns with her husband Carl a new farm in Oregon.

For 35 years, Carl was owner of Woodleaf Farm, a certified organic fruit farm in California. Carl helped to direct, design and run the CCOF Foundation “Going Organic Project” and taught organic farming courses at Butte Community College. Carl was also the president of the North Valley chapter of CCOF and a board member for: CCOF and Community Alliance with Family Farmers. Carl now farms and experiments on a 211 acre farm in eastern Oregon. He is a Soils Consultant who works with farmers to balance soil minerals and design/maintain organic orchards.
