Organic Production Research Field Day at UBC Farm

Organic Production Research Field Day at UBC Farm

Tuesday, October 23 | 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. | FREE-registration encouraged| UBC Farm 3461 Ross Drive, Vancouver

Join us for a field day hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm! We will provide an opportunity for researchers to share their cutting-edge applied research directly with producers, while producers will have the opportunity to offer input on research priorities. This event is focused on providing information for organic and ecologically-oriented producers and aspiring producers on how they can enhance their operations through the exploration of evidence-based best management practices. Those with interest in carrot production may also be interested in attending a field day on 16 October.

The Organic Production Research Field Day will include morning sessions led by researchers from UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, including representatives from the Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes Lab (led by Dr. Sean Smukler, Assistant Professor, Applied Biology & Soil Science) and the Plant-Insect Ecology & Evolution Lab (led by Dr. Juli Carrillo, Assistant Professor, Applied Biology).
After lunch, there will be a session introducing new CSFS research and outreach initiatives of interest to organic producers, including organic seed/plant breeding research (presented by Dr. Alex Lyon, CSFS researcher); assessments of contributions of organic agriculture to food system sustainability in BC and across Canada, focusing on agroecological management and job quality (presented by Susanna Klassen, UBC PhD candidate); and BC Food Web, an online resource for research-based agriculture and food information (presented by Dr. Lisa Powell, CSFS researcher).  There will also be a research-oriented tour of UBC Farm.
This event is FREE to attend.  Lunch will be provided to all who register by 19 October, and will be available while supplies last to those who register after 19 October or on-site at the event

About your host:

Dr. Lisa Powell is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm and the Food and Agriculture Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley.  Her research focuses on agricultural land use, regional food systems, food policy, new crop opportunities, and food literacy.  Another significant aspect of her work is translating research into usable formats that can be made available to farmers, food processors, educators, policy makers, and others working with food systems. She leads BC Food Web , a resource to improve access to sustainable food systems information.

This event is made possible in part through funding from the Canadian Agriculture Partnership, the BC Ministry of Agriculture, the Government of Canada, and Metro Vancouver.
