Maya In Exile Garden

Vancouver, BC - 10th season at our market
See this vendor's market dates for 2019
In 1986 five Maya families came to Canada as refugees from Guatemala. Nearly a decade later, urged on by a UBC student, these families secured a plot of land at UBC Farm to practice their Mayan farming traditions and keep this millennia-old cultural knowledge alive for future generations. Now, firmly rooted in the Maya in Exile Garden, the ancestral crops known as the “Three Sisters” (corn, beans and squash) are grown along with an ebullient array of flowers and sold at UBC Farm’s Saturday markets. Along with the garden’s output, the goal is to celebrate and share this rich yet relatively unknown Indigenous knowledge and its stories in order to educate local people about true Mayan culture. To that end, members of the Maya in Exile Garden offer public workshops such as Three Sisters in the Kitchen and what is a traditional Maya cooking workshop. Authentic meals utilizing las tres hermanas (The Three Sisters) are featured, such as tamalitos de flor de calabaza con salsa de miltomate (tamales filled with squash flowers served with tomatillo salsa), ensalada tradicional (traditional salad), ejotes en sopa (green beans in soup) and dulce de calabaza (squash dessert). Keep an eye out for these workshops by joining the newsletter and meet the members of the Maya in Exile Garden at the farmers market every Saturday. Proceeds from the garden’s sales help fund a project in Guatemala that develops Mayan girls’ weaving skills to create unique, sellable goods and thus help lift these other families’ incomes and futures.

Pureland Greenhouse

Burnaby, BC - 1st season at our market
See this vendor's market dates for 2019
We conducted several prototypes in climate-controlled and pesticide free hydroponic greenhouse for leafy veggies and microgreens with collaboration from the University of Fraser Valley. We selected the most suitable LED lights, seeds and nutrients for Pureland Greenhouse brand. After the successful prototypes, we used our research data to scale up to our current growing system. At this time, with our super fast cycle, we focus on growing broccoli and radish microgreens because they are the most nutritional veggies based on this study result by University of Saskatchewan. U of S’ studies show the benefits of glucoraphanin / sulfurophane from broccoli sprouts / microgreens in protection against cancers and other oxidative and degenerative diseases, significantly improving eyesight and diabetes. Because broccoli sprouts are so rich in glucoraphanin, just about 70 – 140 grams is all that is needed each day, as estimating with our strong broccoli microgreens, you may only need 50-120grams a day. We grow quality organic seeds in food grade plastic containers and directly pass the containers to our customers, and then customers will consume microgreens with roots, and then return the containers when they get more microgreens next time. We promote this way to live in an environmental-friendly and sustainable manner with the freshest veggies in our daily life. In near future, we will grow watercress, bok choi and spinach and continuously develop more efficient systems and processes for growing new vegetables.

We mix exotic masalas and spice blends. Most people don't keep large varieties of spices on hand and thus find preparing exotic cuisines rather daunting. If spices are rarely used they are often kept too long and become stale. We make it simple for you by having created these masalas from old family (secret!) recipes so that you can easily replicate these dishes (such as butter chicken, biryanis, and even chai!)

They also have life skills workshops and other facilitators that come to the farm and facilitate various workshops. At CRUW there is always an Elder that is there for the youth as well. They teach them about the medicines they grow and how to transform them into different salves, oils, and creams. The youth will then take the products they make and do fund raising at various events. All the proceeds go back to the youth and back into their programming.

Making jewellery is as ancient as painting pictures on walls. From Neolithic ornaments made of clay and stones to refined gold and silver, to pearls, crystals, vintage beads, and semi-precious stones. Jewellery design throughout the years has found a way to reflect the aesthetic of the times and fashion trends. For me designing jewellery is a seductive endeavour. My inspiration comes from different places: living in and travelling to different parts of the world, architecture, art, nature, and music. My jewelry designs are a reflection of my character: adventurous, refined, artistic, modern and a little edgy. All Irit Sorokin Designs are Extremely easy to wear everday and are handmade with love in our vancouver Studio. Irit Sorokin Designs specializes in small production jewelry, they are not mass produced making each design a little more unique.
