The UBC Farm is excited and honored to be named one of Canada’s most ambitious and successful farm markets. A recent article published by Maclean’s Magazine’s OnCampus Edition, notes the increasing popularity and success of on-campus farmer’s markets.
Among the markets highlighted in the piece, the UBC Farm and Campus Markets were described as the most ambitious and successful. Moreover, the UBC Farm was the only student-driven market among those highlighted that produces the very food it sells. Currently, the UBC Farm’s campus and farm markets generate the majority of the revenue for the farm’s operating budget. The UBC Farm’s emphasis on strengthening regional and international food systems through interdisciplinary teaching, learning and research is dependent upon the presence of a full-scale working farm system.
Other markets highlighted include the McMaster University Farmer’s Market, which prides itself on providing healthy and local food options for the campus population. Like the UBC Farm a decade ago, this market has been initiated and run by students.
To experience the UBC Farm Market firsthand, stop by the UBC Farm on Saturday from 9am-1pm, from mid-June through late October. Campus Markets take place in the UBC Bookstore plaza on Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm, from mid-June through mid-November.
