The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm has hosted this symposium at UBC since 2014, each time growing in size and scope reflecting the growth in our centre’s research. It is an annual UBC event that brings together students, faculty, and staff to discuss pathways to just and sustainable food systems.

The People's Counter Enclosure: Alternative land access and agrarian citizenship in British Columbia, J. Dennis, Msc Candidate, UBC Land and Food Systems
The Symposium is a day packed with presentations and discussions with students, Faculty members and guest speakers on their exciting work in food sustainability.
Dennis is a Masters student in the Integrated Studies in Land and Food Systems program working under the supervision of Dr. Hannah Wittman. Dennis’ broad research interests are sustainable agriculture, agroecology, food sovereignty, farmland protection and access, and agricultural land use policy and planning. They have an academic background in political science, gender studies and agrocecology and have returned to school in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC after working several years as a farm hand on Vancouver Island and continued to work as farm labourer as well as a field research assistant at the UBC Farm. Over the past two years, Dennis has been collaborating on the Farmland Access project led by Dr. Hannah Wittman and hosted by the UBC Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and is currently working on an initiative to establish a Foodlands Trust in BC with our community partners Farm Folk City Folk in Vancouver and CR-FAIR in Victoria.
Seth’s interest in sustainable agriculture education began during his Master’s degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Montana at the PEAS Farm (Program in Ecological Agriculture and Society) and through his work as Farm Coordinator at the university’s Towne’s Harvest Garden. Seth then went on to complete a Certificate in Ecological Horticulture at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Before coming to the UBC Farm as Practicum Coordinator, Seth participated to the Horticulture Science PhD program at the University of Florida and worked as the Education Coordinator at Cloud Mountain Farm Center in Washington State where he honed his ability to create transformational curriculum for emerging farmer training.
Danette Jubinville is of Saulteaux, Cree, German, Jewish, French and Scottish ancestry, and has had the honour of being a guest to Coast Salish territory since birth. Danette is in the fourth year of her BA in First Nations Studies and has been involved with the UBC farm since 2011, when she volunteered with the Faculty of Education’s Intergenerational Landed Learning program. Danette is an Indigenous feminist who is inspired by plants and the people who love them. This summer, as the Indigenous Research & Education Garden Intern, Danette had the incredible opportunity to learn from the Medicine Collective. Learning from and on the land in a community-based setting has helped Danette to better understand her responsibilities to her family, her communities, and the world. After she completes her degree, she plans to apply to the UBC School of Midwifery.
Carmelle Javney Mohr
Carmelle strives to deepen kinships between human communities and the Natural World in response to global crises. Her experiences of resilient community – raised near Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and on land in Treaty 6 territory – led to her study Globalization & Development at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. She has worked in and founded various ecological and community efforts in BC, Alberta and Peru including Responsibility for the Land, Alberta Voices, and Spirit of the Land. Having lived and worked abroad, Carmelle holds an understanding of Canadian extractivist culture as undercurrent to global injustice, about which she writes and presents across Western Canada. She recently completed practical studies in Agroecology at UBC Farm and currently continues work for the Chester Ronning Centre. She is aspiring farmer-professor and potluck-profess-er, and most of all, believes that within our diversities is a commonality that binds us all: our great, commonplace.
Coming from Lebanon in 2006, Cristel was overwhelmed with the new world of information and prospects in Vancouver. Her university classes not only helped her complete her degree, but also introduced her to many insightful people, rich experiences and endless opportunities highlighting nutrition and sustainability; all made possible at UBC. Cristel put her multi-dimensional passions in science, food, business, education and people all together to become a Registered Dietitian. She is building her career as a casual clinical dietitian at Vancouver Coastal Health and as a business entrepreneur of Nutrifoodie, a food-focused approach to Nutrition Consultation and Education.
Navin Ramankutty joined UBC IRES in July 2014 as a Professor in Global Food Security and Sustainability. Navin’s research concerns global land use change and its implications, focusing on agricultural practice and the implications for environmental change and food security. He employs data and models to address the question of how to feed 9-10 billion people while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint. His research interests include global agriculture and food security, land use and cover change, global environmental change, global climate change, earth system science, ecosystem services, climate-vegetation interactions, global biogeochemical cycles.
Assistant Professor, UBC Applied Biology and Soil Sciences; Junior Chair, Agriculture and the Environment
Originally from Berkeley, California, Sean earned a PhD in Ecology at the University of California, Davis (2008), where he spent time working on the UC Davis student farm and an MSc in Forest Soils at the University of Washington in Seattle (2003). Sean spent three years at The Earth Institute at Columbia University as a Post Doctoral Fellow and then an Associate Research Scientist in the Tropical Agriculture and Rural Environment Program. He now focuses on the synergies and trade-offs between agricultural land management, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, using landscapes from El Salvador to the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at the UBC Farm.
Olivia is a 5th year student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems studying Global Resource Systems. She had the opportunity in her 4th year of studies to develop videos for the UBC Farm as part of a team in her LFS 350 class. Through this experience, combined with her involvements at UBC Recreation Intramurals and UBC Dance Club, she has decided to pursue further education or a career in the marketing field post-graduation.
Marika van Reeuwyk
Marika is a 3rd year Applied Biology student specializing in plant and soil sciences. Originally from Agassiz and with a strong pull towards nature, her studies and life experiences have helped cultivate a passion for agroecology, geography, and conservation. She has always been particularly interested in learning about organisms that are “misunderstood” by our society, which is what initially inspired her fascination with insects.
A Vancouver native, Rickey received his BSc.(Agriculture), MSc. and PhD. from UBC, then headed east in 1984 to begin his professional research and teaching career at the University of Guelph. Throughout his time at Guelph, Rickey served as Deputy Chair and Chair of the Department of Food Science from 1995-2000, and Assistant Vice-President Research for Agri-Food Programs in 2000-2001. Most recently, he held the positions of Professor of Food Science and Canada Research Chair in Food Protein Structure, and Scientific Director of the Food Institute at the U of G. He was also Scientific Director of Advanced Foods and Materials Canada Inc. (AFM Canada), and the President of the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST). Rickey commenced his five-year term as Dean of UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems on October 1, 2014. He brings a strong commitment to research, teaching and learning.
