Field Trips

UBC Farm welcomes Pre-K to Grade 12 students to our school field trips. There is an abundance of hands-on activities in our educational programs: exploring the apple orchard and honeybees, harvesting seasonal produce, foraging in the forest, and for older students, hands-on work in ecological restoration, gardening, and sustainable agriculture, just to name a few.


Our field trips provide an opportunity for children to see and learn about a working certified organic farm and to discuss important social and ecological aspects of food production in our area.

About Field Trips

All field trips include some walking to various features of our working organic farm. Pre-K to Grade 7 field trips are led by our education team and feature one of three seasonal learning packages: Pollinator, Harvesting, or Forest. Visit again to see how our farm changes through the seasons! Grades 8-12 visits combine a guided tour with a hands-on experiential component – such as ecological restoration, forest stewardship, gardening, sustainable agriculture, or food systems education – tailored to the season and your class’s interests.

Days and Times

Field trips are 2 hours long by default and are available at 9:00am, 11:15am, or 1:30pm. Full-day or custom-time visits can also be arranged. If your ideal field trip time is unavailable, please feel free to reach out to ubcfarm.farmwonders@ubc.ca.

Cost

Field trips cost $250+GST for up to 22 students, or $350+GST for up to 30 students.

We want you and your participants to feel safe while visiting us at the UBC Farm – we are open to having as many chaperones attending your field trip as you need, free of charge. If you’re unsure how many to bring, feel free to reach out and we’re happy to help you plan.

Elementary School Field Trips

Get ready for a day of hands-on discovery! Each field trip is guided by our experienced education team and features one of three seasonal learning packages, chosen to match what’s happening on the Farm that time of year. Since our activities shift with the seasons, no two visits are ever quite the same – it’s a great excuse to come back and explore something new each time!

 

Harvesting Package

  • Harvest seasonal produce (such as kale, apples, squash, pumpkins, and more)
  • Explore herbs through hands-on sensory activities
  • Plant seeds to take home

Pollinator Package

  • Visit our apple orchard
  • Learn about pollinators and identify common species
  • Visit our honeybees
  • Play interactive pollinator games
  • Plant seeds to take home

Forest Package

  • Explore our agroforestry trail
  • Learn to identify native plants
  • Search for mushrooms and birds
  • Experience seasonal foraging activities to take a small piece of the forest home

The more helping hands, the better! For elementary groups, we recommend bringing at least 1 chaperone per 10 students to help everyone get the most out of their day on the Farm.

Secondary School Field Trips

Looking for something a little more in-depth for your older students? Each Grades 8-12 visit combines a guided tour of the UBC Farm with hands-on experiential learning, tailored to provide meaningful, place-based learning connected to the Farm’s work. Whether your class is exploring environmental science, food systems, or sustainability more broadly, our team will help connect the visit to what you’re already learning in the classroom. Depending on the season, activities may include:

 
  • Ecological restoration
  • Forest stewardship
  • Gardening
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Food systems education

As with all our field trips, activities vary throughout the year depending on the season.

Before You Visit

  • Field trips run rain or shine, so please have students dress for the weather.
  • Closed-toe shoes are a must!
  • Parking is available in a nearby UBC Parking Services lot or along Ross Drive (approximately a 3-minute walk from the Farm).

Policies

Field Trip Cancellation

In the unlikely event that a field trip must be cancelled by the Farm, all fees will be fully refunded, or you’ll have the option to reschedule your visit.

Refund Policy for Field Trips

If you cancel more than two full business days before your scheduled visit, you’ll receive a full refund minus a $25 administrative fee. If you fail to arrive without cancelling in advance, or cancel less than two full business days before your visit, we regret that we’re unable to offer a refund.
