Introduction to Beekeeping

About the Workshop

If you’re either just getting your honey bees for the first time or are seriously considering keeping honey bees, this workshop is a wonderful introduction to the fascinating and rewarding (mostly!) craft of beekeeping. Areas covered include: equipment required, how to maximize success with your new bee colony in the first year, swarm management and control, wintering bees, and, of course, an overview of the main pest and diseases affecting honey bees in our area. Also included will be an overview of the main plants to attract pollinators to your garden.

About the Instructor

Gordon Mackay has been keeping bees for over 20 years and regularly teaches workshops on apiculture. He got bitten by the honey bee bug after attending horticulture school in Scotland, and has attended the incredible black bee sanctuary on the Scottish Island of Colonsay on two different occasions to learn from Andrew Abrahams, the esteemed (and only) beekeeper on Colonsay. Gordon’s apiary is located on S. Vancouver Island.
